About Resilient Capacity Advisors
Rick Astray-Caneda III has practiced Design Thinking driven consulting with state and local governments since 2008 under the mentorship of leading firms including Deloitte and Accenture. He holds a PhD from Florida International University where he studied how social vulnerability interplays with local government disaster mitigation policies and how that impacts resilience. Rick’s passion for this led him to volunteer for two and half years on a part-time basis as a strategy consultant for the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction private sector partnership for global disaster risk reduction (ARISE). He also helped start Deloitte’s Global Center for Crisis Management.

Rick leads a nonprofit, the Friends of the David Powell Clinic, focused on driving change for health equity in Central Texas and directly funding HIV and AIDS medications for patients in need. He has led the organization in shifting from a primarily reactive model to one that includes funding projects to address health equity so patients stay healthier from the outset by having care that meets their needs in the places that work for them.

Rick enjoys exploring the spaces around him through cooking with local ingredients and subsequently sharing meals with people. He is an avid traveler who enjoys soaking in culture in off-the-beaten-path locales.
